Naturalists Companion Art

These charming watercolors first appeared in the 19th century Naturalists Companion by Kenelm Henry Digby. The scripted manuscript included 300 illustrations by Digby of animals, fish, and insects that he faithfully painted from live examples or taxidermy specimens on display in the museums of his native Dublin, Ireland. Rather than the scientific names for his subjects, the Irish naturalist identified each creature by its popular name in graceful script to make his work more accessible.
